The astrological tradition

Scorpio: What the Tradition Says

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, a fixed water sign. In the astrological tradition it stands for depth, intensity and transformation, and it is ruled by Mars (traditional) and Pluto (modern). It is a cultural tradition offered for inspiration, not a science of fate.

This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.

Scorpio in the zodiac wheel

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac and covers ecliptic longitudes 210° to 240° (the ecliptic is the Sun’s apparent yearly path across the sky). In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Scorpio from about 23 October to 21 November. The exact dates shift by a day or so from year to year, so if you were born near a border, check an ephemeris (a table of planetary positions). The two ways of counting are explained in Tropical and sidereal zodiac.

Astrology is a cultural tradition and a symbolic language for reflection. It does not claim that planets cause events. Everything below is offered for inspiration.

Water element and fixed quality

Scorpio is one of three water signs, alongside Cancer and Pisces. Water is linked with feeling, memory and intuition. Scorpio is often pictured as a deep lake rather than a quick river: calm on the surface, layered beneath. More on the elements: The elements.

It is also a fixed sign. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season (Scorpio falls in mid-autumn in the Northern Hemisphere) and stand for steadiness, persistence and determination. That is why descriptions of Scorpio so often pair emotional depth with staying power. See also The crosses.

The tradition also calls Scorpio a yin, or receptive, sign. This is a symbolic term about inwardness and reserve, and has nothing to do with a person’s gender.

Traditional and modern ruler

In classical astrology each sign has a ruling planet. Scorpio is tied to Mars, the planet of action, courage and will. Mars also rules Aries, but in Scorpio its expression is described as quieter, more strategic and patient. See Mars in astrology and the overview of ruling planets.

After Pluto was discovered in 1930, many modern astrologers assigned it to Scorpio. Pluto symbolises deep change, endings and fresh starts, and crisis as an invitation to transform. That is why the phoenix is a popular image for the sign today. More: Pluto in astrology.

An astronomical note: in 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) classified Pluto as a dwarf planet. This does not alter its symbolism in the tradition, which is separate from astronomical classification. See Why Pluto is not a planet.

Symbol and myth

The glyph is ♏, an m with an arrow or sting at the end, recalling the scorpion’s tail. In the tradition the sign is connected with the eighth house of a chart, a theme of shared resources, transformation and what is not shown to everyone (Eighth house).

The best-known Greek myth connects the scorpion with the hunter Orion. In one version the scorpion is sent to sting Orion, and afterwards both are placed in the sky. It is often noted that Orion sets as Scorpius rises. The story exists in several versions, and who sent the scorpion is told differently. See also Orion.

What the tradition says about Sun in Scorpio

Traditional descriptions most often mention intensity, loyalty, keen observation, a taste for privacy and strong will. The challenges named are mistrust, jealousy and difficulty letting go. These are broad archetypes, not verdicts: every person is far more than their Sun sign.

For the Scorpio woman and the Scorpio man, the tradition uses the same key words. Differences people notice come from the whole birth chart: the Moon, the ascendant, the houses and the aspects.

Compatibility in the tradition

In astrological tradition the most harmonious matches are trines, meaning the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces. Sextiles, the earth signs Virgo and Capricorn, are described as supportive. The opposite sign is Taurus, forming an opposition: a symbol of attraction and complement, but also of a different attitude to security. Squares with Leo and Aquarius are read as prompts for conversation and growth. No single sign decides how two people get on.

The sign Scorpio versus the constellations Scorpius and Ophiuchus

The sign Scorpio is an equal 30° slice of the zodiac. The constellation Scorpius is one of the 88 areas of the sky recognised by the IAU, with uneven boundaries. Its bright red star is Antares, whose name is often interpreted as “rival of Mars” because of its colour.

The Sun actually crosses the constellation Scorpius for only about a week in late November. It then passes through the neighbouring Ophiuchus, which also lies on the ecliptic but is not counted as a sign in the traditional zodiac. The reason is that the traditional zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts rather than following constellation outlines. Precession (the slow wobble of Earth’s axis) has also gradually shifted the signs relative to the stars. Hence the talk of a “13th sign”, which is not part of the astrological system. In short

Scorpio is the sign of depth, persistence and transformation. Its symbols invite a question rather than give a prediction: what do I want to keep, and what is it time to release? Use the description as a mirror, not as a forecast.

Questions and answers

What are the dates of Scorpio?

In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Scorpio from about 23 October to 21 November. Dates move by a day or so each year, so if your birthday is on the border, check an ephemeris for the exact time.

What element is Scorpio and who rules it?

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Tradition gives it Mars as ruler, while many modern astrologers also assign Pluto.

Which signs are most compatible with Scorpio in tradition?

Water signs Cancer and Pisces are traditionally seen as harmonious, and earth signs Virgo and Capricorn as supportive. This is symbolic language for inspiration, not a prediction about relationships.

Why is the Sun not in the constellation Scorpius for the whole sign?

The sign is an equal 30° slice of the zodiac, while the constellation has uneven IAU boundaries. The Sun crosses Scorpius for only about a week before moving into Ophiuchus.
