The astrological tradition

The 12 Astrological Houses: A Complete Overview

In astrological tradition, the 12 houses are twelve divisions of the sky calculated for the exact time and place of birth. Each house is linked with an area of life, such as identity, resources, communication, home, love, work and partnership. This is offered for reflection and inspiration, not prediction.

This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.

What the houses are and how they are calculated

In astrological tradition, the houses are twelve sections into which the sky is divided for a specific moment and place. If the zodiac signs describe how an energy shows up and the planets describe what is being expressed, the houses suggest where in life it plays out. This is a cultural tradition rather than a scientific claim: planets do not cause events, and a chart is a symbolic language for reflection.

The calculation is geometric. The first reference point is the Ascendant, the zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The first house begins there. The other key point is the Midheaven (MC). Between these axes, different methods divide the sky differently; see house systems. The result forms part of a natal chart.

Houses are counted counter-clockwise, from the first to the twelfth, starting at the Ascendant.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

Tradition groups the houses into three types according to their position relative to the four axes of the chart.

The word “cadent” comes from a Latin root meaning “falling”, but in older texts it is a technical term, not a judgement.

A short description of each house

  1. First house: the self, first impressions, how you begin things.
  2. Second house: resources, skills, values and your relationship with possessions.
  3. Third house: communication, the near environment, siblings, everyday learning.
  4. Fourth house: roots, family, home and a sense of security.
  5. Fifth house: creativity, play, romance, children and joy.
  6. Sixth house: daily routine, habits, service and self-care.
  7. Seventh house: partnerships and close one-to-one relationships.
  8. Eighth house: shared resources, transformation, deep bonds.
  9. Ninth house: travel, philosophy, higher education, the search for meaning.
  10. Tenth house: vocation, public role, life goals.
  11. Eleventh house: friends, communities, hopes and dreams.
  12. Twelfth house: solitude, the subconscious, rest and endings.

These are general themes from tradition; each school emphasises them a little differently.

What an “empty” house means

A house is called “empty” when it contains no planet. This is entirely normal: a chart has roughly ten main bodies for twelve houses, so some houses will always be unoccupied. An empty house does not mean that area of life is missing or weak.

Tradition looks instead at the sign on the house’s edge, then at that sign’s ruling planet and where it sits in the chart. In this way an empty house still has its own message. Transits also pass through it and temporarily bring it to life.

Why houses depend on time and place

The signs in your chart depend mostly on the date, but houses depend on the rotation of the Earth. The Ascendant moves continuously, and its sign changes on average about every two hours; this also depends on geographic latitude. Two people born on the same day but at different times or in different cities can therefore have very different houses.

The time zone and the exact birth time matter too. If you do not know yours, read what if I don’t know my birth time; part of a chart remains meaningful without houses. To go through a chart step by step, see how to read a natal chart.

In the end, houses are a tool for self-reflection, not a forecast of fate. Use them as questions: “What does this area of life mean to me right now?”

Questions and answers

How many houses are there in astrology and what do they mean?

There are twelve. In tradition each house describes an area of life, such as identity, resources, communication, family, love, work, partnership and aspirations.

What does an empty house mean in a natal chart?

It simply has no planet in it, which is very common. It does not mean the area is weak. Tradition looks at the sign of the house and where its ruling planet is placed.

Which houses are angular, succedent and cadent?

Angular are 1, 4, 7 and 10; succedent are 2, 5, 8 and 11; cadent are 3, 6, 9 and 12. The groups describe different qualities: action, stability and adaptation.

Why do my houses change if the birth time is different?

Because the Ascendant moves continuously with the Earth’s rotation, and its sign changes on average about every two hours. A different birthplace also gives different houses.
