The astrological tradition

The Eleventh House: Friends, Communities and Hopes

In the astrological tradition the eleventh house is linked with friendships, groups, communities, allies and hopes for the future. Its natural sign is Aquarius, its classical ruler is Saturn, and modern astrologers often add Uranus. Its ancient name is the Good Spirit (Greek: Agathos Daimon).

This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.

The eleventh house is one of the twelve sectors of a birth chart. In the astrological tradition it is the house of friends: it speaks about the people we choose, the groups we belong to, and the hopes we carry forward. This is a cultural tradition offered for reflection and inspiration. It is not a scientific claim and not a prediction of fate.

Where the house sits in the chart

Houses are counted from the Ascendant, the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon, and then move counterclockwise around the wheel. The eleventh house is the fifth of the six houses (7–12) that lie above the horizon. It comes right after the tenth house, tied to the Midheaven, and just before the twelfth. On a standard chart it occupies the upper-left sector.

For the bigger picture of all twelve sectors, see The Houses. Keep in mind that there are different house systems. In some of them the boundaries of the sector shift, while in the whole-sign approach the eleventh house is simply the entire sign that follows the sign of the tenth.

The tradition also notes two geometric relationships. The eleventh house is in a sextile (60°) to the first house, so it is said to look upon it in a friendly way. Directly across the wheel, in opposition, is the fifth house of personal creativity, pleasure and play. A common way to put it: the fifth house is about what we do for the joy of it, the eleventh about what we share with others.

The themes according to the tradition

In modern readings the eleventh house is associated with:

The question the house poses is: to whom and to what do I belong, and where do I hope to go together with others? A planet in this house is read as a theme that shows up among friends and in group life. For example, Venus there is linked with warm, sociable friendships, while Saturn is linked with responsibility and a smaller but lasting circle. These are symbolic images for inspiration, not claims that planets cause events. For the planets themselves, see Venus in astrology and Saturn in astrology.

An empty house does not mean a lack of friends. Traditionally, astrologers look at the sign on the cusp and at where the ruler of that sign is placed.

Natural sign and rulers of the house

The idea of the natural zodiac matches the first house with the first sign, the second house with the second, and so on. The eleventh house therefore corresponds to Aquarius, the eleventh sign. Aquarius is an air and fixed sign, and the tradition ties it to ideas of collectivity, friendship, equality and looking toward the future. For the groupings of signs, see the elements and the modalities.

The classical ruler of Aquarius is Saturn. After Uranus was discovered in 1781, many modern astrologers linked it with Aquarius and the eleventh house as well. This is why you often meet a double rulership: Saturn as the structure of the group, Uranus as the new and unconventional within it. See also ruling planets and Uranus in astrology.

Hellenistic astrology adds one more link: Jupiter is said to rejoice in the eleventh house. Since Jupiter symbolizes generosity and goodwill, the idea suits a house about gratitude, support and shared joy.

The classical name of the house

In Hellenistic astrology (from the last centuries BCE and the first centuries CE) the eleventh house was called Agathos Daimon, the Good Spirit. Here daimon does not mean a demon in the modern sense, but a helping spirit or benevolent power that accompanies a person. The house was associated with good deeds, the help of friends and favor. Its counterpart is the twelfth house, known as the Bad Spirit, described in the article on the twelfth house, where the theme turns from community toward solitude and the inner world.

As with many details in the history of the discipline, names and meanings of the houses changed between periods and schools. You can follow this path further in History of astrology.

How to use this idea

If you look at your own chart for inspiration, you might ask gentle questions: Which friends support me? In which communities do I feel at home? What do I dream of when I think about the future? A chart is a prompt for reflection, not a verdict. It does not replace a conversation with people close to you, nor professional advice on health, money or other important decisions.
